Brooks Peninsula Shoreline Clean Up

RCRS partnered with Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k:tles7et'h First Nation for two weeks of remote marine debris cleanup along the southern side of Brooks Peninsula in July 2021, funded by the Clean Coast Clean Waters (CCCW) initiative.

During previous RCRS expeditions to Brooks Peninsula, we had mapped and documented an overwhelming amount of marine debris in this area. A protected ecological reserve, the peninsula's orientation to the currents of the Pacific Ocean makes it an area with one of the highest accumulations of marine debris on the BC coast.

With close to 20,000kgs of debris removed from 32 km of shoreline in 13 days of fieldwork, our team executed this project with zero health and safety incidents in over 1,500 hours worked.

Thank you to Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k:tles7et'h First Nation for the warm welcome into their territory, to BC Parks for the necessary permits to work within the ecological reserve, Coastal Restoration Society for the general administration of this project, and to our hard-working team of technicians.
