CCCW Nootka Sound Shoreline Restoration 2023

As part of the Clean Coast Clean Waters (CCCW) initiative, RCRS executed a shoreline marine debris cleanup from the Nuchatlitz Islands to Hesquiaht Peninsula in the fall of 2023. In collaboration with the Hesquiaht First Nation, Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation, and Nuchatlaht First Nation, 20,353 kg of marine debris was removed from 376 km of shoreline, including Nuchatlitz Provincial Park, Nootka Island, and Hesquiaht Peninsula. The debris was compiled in central locations, longlined by helicopter onto a barge and transported to Gold River for sorting. The collected marine debris was repurposed where possible and the rest was sent to the Ocean Legacy Foundation for recycling and to the landfill.

We are grateful to the Hesquiaht First Nation, Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation, and Nuchatlaht First Nation for their warm welcome into their territories and collaboration.
