CCCW KA:'YU:'K'T'H'/ CHE:K:TLES7ET'H' Shoreline Restoration 2023
RCRS partnered with the Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k:tles7et'h' First Nations to execute a marine debris cleanup along the southern side of Brooks Peninsula in August and September of 2023, funded by the Clean Coast Clean Waters (CCCW) initiative. A protected ecological reserve, the peninsula's orientation to the Pacific Ocean currents results in one of the highest accumulations of marine debris on the BC coast. During previous RCRS expeditions to Brooks Peninsula, we had mapped, documented, and extracted an overwhelming amount of marine debris in the area. On this project, 25,923 kg of debris was removed from 187 km of shoreline while creating 26 jobs.
We extend our gratitude to the Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k:tles7et'h' First Nation for their warm welcome into their territory, to BC Parks for providing the necessary permits to work within the ecological reserve, and to our hard-working team of technicians.
