Nootka Island Shoreline Clean Up

As part of the Clean Coast Clean Water (CCCW) initiative, RCRS planned and executed shoreline marine debris cleanups in the Nootka Sound area in the summer of 2021.

Collaborating with Ehattesaht and Nuchatlaht First Nations and Shorebird Expeditions, 40 crew (including 14 local youth)  removed almost 2,000kgs of debris from this sensitive ecosystem. With a total of 10 field days, the crews worked to clean the shoreline on Catala Island, within Nuchatlitz Provincial Park. Debris was compiled into central locations and loaded by hand onto a 24’ landing craft vessel.

Once transported to Tahsis, the debris was loaded onto a barge and sent to an industrial yard in Gold River, where it was sorted and sent to the Ocean Legacy Foundation’s recycling facility in Richmond BC, set aside for repurposing or sent to the landfill in Campbell River. Approximately 85% of the debris was set to be recycled or repurposed.

We are grateful to Ehattesaht and Nuchalaht First Nations for their hard work and collaboration, to Shorebird Expeditions for your expertise in leading the project and to Coastal Restoration Society for the overall administration.
