Deer Group - Shoreline Cleanup In collaboration with Parley for the Oceans
In October of 2020 Rugged Coast teamed up with members of Parley for the Oceans and ventured out to another place close to our hearts, the Deer Group Archipelago on the west coast of Vancouver Island. For 4 days crew worked hard to remove marine debris from this challenging environment.
We put our Trash Craft to work alongside Rugged Coast member vessels getting people on and off the rocks between swells and tide swings. The geography of this area is not something to take lightly, it is wild and jagged west coast rocks with surge channels and pocket beaches acting as magnets for all kinds of debris. Wetsuits and paddle boards played a key role in our crews getting to and from the shore, which meant that sometimes debris was swum out to waiting vessels.
The Deer Group is home to some of the most amazing kayaking routes and sport fishing, as well as allows access to some pretty great surf. Rugged Coast has spent many days with our families and friends exploring and enjoying this area, so it was a no-brainer to get out there and help protect it.
We are grateful for the support from Parley for the Oceans, our wonderful volunteers and donors who all made this trip a success.
